Growing up in 1940's Brooklyn, Joey Margolis, a precocious 12 year old baseball fanatic, chooses Charlie Banks, a NY Giants baseball player, as his hero.  This novel isn't mainly about baseball; it's about a boy and his hero.  Their developing friendship is told in the form of letters, newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, etc., with each of the main characters trying to outwit the other, yet all they do is love each other more.
