Fourteen year old Lily Owen lives a difficult life on her uncaring and harsh father’s peach farm. An elderly African American, Rosaleen, raises her after the accidental death of her mother years before, an event that haunts Lily.  Following a racial brawl in 1960s South Carolina, Lily and Rosaleen flee, finding shelter with three black bee-keeping sisters whose honey label Lily found among her mother’s few remaining possessions.  Lily discovers the truth about her mother, but also learns much about bees, life, herself, and others.
