Ishmael Chambers, the one-man staff of the newspaper on San Piedro Island in Puget Sound, is covering the 1954 trial of a high-school classmate (Kabuo Miyamoto) accused of killing another classmate and fellow fisherman (Carl Heine) over a land dispute.  The investigation and trial revive painful memories in the town of a love affair between an American boy and a Japanese girl who grew up to be Kabuo’s wife as well as the exile of Japanese Americans during WWII.
