SAMPLE LESSON
SCOUT:
“It’s not okay to hate anybody.”—Atticus (page 246)
Atticus explains to Scout why even a maniac like Hitler should not be hated.
Atticus lives this lesson by example in his unwaveringly polite treatment
of mean Mrs. Dubose. Furthermore, Atticus avoids getting angry with
Bob Ewell even when the man spits in his face and threatens him. This
is an important lesson because Scout has to learn to cope with the racist
members of her own community. In real life, people have to contend
with others who are intolerant or unlikable in some other way.
